It was a special missions Sunday, and Pastor Julius had invited some of the Campus Crusade for Christ team to come and share information about how all people (kids, students, and adults) can get involved in sharing the Gospel with others. They shared also the importance of The Jesus Movie - did you know that it is available in an app now and translated into over 200 languages? An easy way to share the story of Christ anywhere you might find yourself in the world. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">PRAISE: there were many new people in attendance on Sunday, including a couple who had come during the week for glasses. Also, a man named Max who made a profession of faith - he brought his son with him!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Here are some clips from the worship today: </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BVP8G_gEydY" width="320" youtube-src-id="BVP8G_gEydY"></iframe></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/U7kf_0i8zHI" width="320" youtube-src-id="U7kf_0i8zHI"></iframe></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/POUjxMeWYao" width="320" youtube-src-id="POUjxMeWYao"></iframe></div><br /><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Here are the videos of the baptisms from Saturday (yesterday) and Pastor Julius iterated that he will host baptisms in Sunnyside until everyone has had a chance to come forward to participate.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HvAn2wi1sPE" width="320" youtube-src-id="HvAn2wi1sPE"></iframe></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/pcurUUDw4cw" width="320" youtube-src-id="pcurUUDw4cw"></iframe></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6ir3ckeZ-qs" width="320" youtube-src-id="6ir3ckeZ-qs"></iframe></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/sF1HzlLKB9Y" width="320" youtube-src-id="sF1HzlLKB9Y"></iframe></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/q7V-6kutVD8" width="320" youtube-src-id="q7V-6kutVD8"></iframe></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BleKCK3KyXg" width="320" youtube-src-id="BleKCK3KyXg"></iframe></div><br /><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">After some more time to fellowship with Julius and Cintia and some of their family, Linda has been successfully delivered to the airport and will be on her way to Phoenix soon. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Thanks for reading and we hope to see you read the blog again on an upcoming trip - or better yet, we hope you join us next time!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Also, special thanks to FSBC Fountain Hills (now, Cornerstone Family Church) for donating many glasses as well. A short walk from the church, we met at the Sunnyside Community Pool, a very large city pool. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJMUeWWffUOM-7PBlXwQQGaBS3RnsOMlBHH0IqyG-osbEMkE5lEdIReqh9kAJ2gUoIyJDqskcJZiEfSoC62gdtJ6E87weuFKf4FfyYv0kO8zOYi5EzpaRaqdGktk26jjkQRzyO7q0uQ0j6KHnnNJ7JZn-Em72-MWejK9D2W2D5vxZE4S89HUc_D0gSZQ/s4032/IMG_0177.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJMUeWWffUOM-7PBlXwQQGaBS3RnsOMlBHH0IqyG-osbEMkE5lEdIReqh9kAJ2gUoIyJDqskcJZiEfSoC62gdtJ6E87weuFKf4FfyYv0kO8zOYi5EzpaRaqdGktk26jjkQRzyO7q0uQ0j6KHnnNJ7JZn-Em72-MWejK9D2W2D5vxZE4S89HUc_D0gSZQ/s320/IMG_0177.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">We met with six individuals who committed their lives to Christ, including a family of three. The session was two-fold: counseling basics for pastors as they counsel the people of their church, and also an opportunity to discuss trauma and issues pastors themselves face. The session went very long as there were a lot of questions - and again, it is a well-received discussion as it is uncommon for pastors to have access to this kind of content. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The session was also a perfect example of the initial vision of Hope Baptist: if the people of Sunnyside/Pretoria can be reached, we can reach the entire continent of Africa. Thank you for praying - it arrived about an hour in to our final clinic today and Pastor Julius will be able to hand them out in other upcoming events. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">We were at Hope Baptist Church again today for the glasses clinics. We saw over 200 people come through and we estimate over 25 professions of faith today. Praise God! Our conversations were encouraging, enlightening, and humbling - the daily lives of people in this part of the world are quite different than ours, and in other ways they are quite the same. The predominant prayer requests that heard this week were related to: searching for jobs (the unemployment rate in SA is around 34%, with the rate over 60% in young males), illness, alcoholism, family issues, parenting decisions, safety, etc. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKXACmu7MBQpUeHHDyq8l_xZ62rpnaMinTvrP9vliyV_BBbPt9qu9Na1sQfdNRpL_NhC3zl7NyW4eg_vwmUSvCtcN4E7oURhRpXyp_QrhMlte0Xc7V2hcv0K8zVfC3TNtS9rQBTDf3c0WZ5_2vIg7hFllJU7L1gEE37ny24zk9qks8WoAQSgeQXKj8cQ/s4032/IMG_0099.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKXACmu7MBQpUeHHDyq8l_xZ62rpnaMinTvrP9vliyV_BBbPt9qu9Na1sQfdNRpL_NhC3zl7NyW4eg_vwmUSvCtcN4E7oURhRpXyp_QrhMlte0Xc7V2hcv0K8zVfC3TNtS9rQBTDf3c0WZ5_2vIg7hFllJU7L1gEE37ny24zk9qks8WoAQSgeQXKj8cQ/s320/IMG_0099.jpeg" width="320" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi60m-I7HMqpaIdnka0SpsB0k2toznNBGRaG_PZSwyzRqbfDOFejggMaFFGreUrnUvWOZjsKIjKnSlkC6P-Gq86o5BXlQxKsHHUzCvXdYhMi3wEyWoUa42BZS88J8198SzrzKcyRzAaocj-CM2lxrfLMnvFG5QZIZE-YO-7kq0sNaqx4sbbjCwM2qIKBQ/s4032/IMG_0100.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi60m-I7HMqpaIdnka0SpsB0k2toznNBGRaG_PZSwyzRqbfDOFejggMaFFGreUrnUvWOZjsKIjKnSlkC6P-Gq86o5BXlQxKsHHUzCvXdYhMi3wEyWoUa42BZS88J8198SzrzKcyRzAaocj-CM2lxrfLMnvFG5QZIZE-YO-7kq0sNaqx4sbbjCwM2qIKBQ/s320/IMG_0100.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhLpz7Xutu0U0CHl266IXt3Qg6McYrrB99JdKsVjONqscGsRBed7LSPZDSnWCp4S64EthuP8Jp753x_fkr0EkciXWfeMhigAZ57OoXIAM1FYmtnE3O7gl6CfijZR9kVN4CvYipgnmho3Tc9p0sL5iilrodeMMNBcW8XiodAW0sgNMNnCB2cyBEHdmyBA/s4032/IMG_0101.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhLpz7Xutu0U0CHl266IXt3Qg6McYrrB99JdKsVjONqscGsRBed7LSPZDSnWCp4S64EthuP8Jp753x_fkr0EkciXWfeMhigAZ57OoXIAM1FYmtnE3O7gl6CfijZR9kVN4CvYipgnmho3Tc9p0sL5iilrodeMMNBcW8XiodAW0sgNMNnCB2cyBEHdmyBA/s320/IMG_0101.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM5hB7s8Uqv_W8nZtSTr4Tq3AspfVHAOg667RDjYal6NqsztIasffzBobeAuW3PuWIb7D91f1H1wVcUuUeP3Gu89d4rICQgt8VsvnmAqZHHjrJ5IIngqO_Kwh2j2xeQjOiRNU6CBjYVgzoKLQoAIX-ocX5BEq_Wi5-MPSDiJr_IpkIhVd9DGySeW5haw/s4032/IMG_0102.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM5hB7s8Uqv_W8nZtSTr4Tq3AspfVHAOg667RDjYal6NqsztIasffzBobeAuW3PuWIb7D91f1H1wVcUuUeP3Gu89d4rICQgt8VsvnmAqZHHjrJ5IIngqO_Kwh2j2xeQjOiRNU6CBjYVgzoKLQoAIX-ocX5BEq_Wi5-MPSDiJr_IpkIhVd9DGySeW5haw/s320/IMG_0102.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">We returned in the late afternoon to start the evening session. John Herr had made himself available to hold counseling sessions for individuals who had signed up during the week. Of course, we don't have details but according to Pastor Julius they were for a life-changing purpose. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Pastor Keith held a session with a group who were interested in learning about worship leadership. The session was well received and it was very touching to hear how comfortable people are to be vulnerable. Someone asked the question: how can I lead worship and stand in front of everyone when my own life is falling apart? Questions of worthiness seem to be universal, don't they?</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Steve and Joy pivoted to teach a session that was originally meant to be for "marriage enrichment", and instead taught tips on communication, intentional time, and true partnership to some couples, young adults and youth. Lots and lots of people.<p> <span style="font-family: arial;">Today was a full, full, full day. To the brim. And also running over... </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhZejWyoL7lV8P94ee_mQ9z_b3T_YjBhR-WTyGS9OBnAfF2MqRl2JRaZt-e2rN6nICTmv-eFihk4IWMzDmMyHugM0pyisO9iWjDBwz9l_fDj4Up_VNrnN_Z0r_kT3-kRnhxStbAxKEMxOG7TW2auwy7LG2BeRM5Ne12FmvsC9bM5L7bB2f8Ey_pgR90yQ" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2908" data-original-width="3696" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhZejWyoL7lV8P94ee_mQ9z_b3T_YjBhR-WTyGS9OBnAfF2MqRl2JRaZt-e2rN6nICTmv-eFihk4IWMzDmMyHugM0pyisO9iWjDBwz9l_fDj4Up_VNrnN_Z0r_kT3-kRnhxStbAxKEMxOG7TW2auwy7LG2BeRM5Ne12FmvsC9bM5L7bB2f8Ey_pgR90yQ" width="305" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">An early start brought us to Hope Baptist Church by 8:30AM to prepare for the reading glasses clinic. The entire team was full of anticipation of what God might have in store for us today - and maybe full of a little anxiousness. Everyone hopes to get "it" right - "it" being the process of potentially leading someone to a profession of faith in Jesus. We as believers understand the gravity of that decision point, but also reminded ourselves that it is merely an opportunity to talk about the love of Jesus and the difference He has made in our lives. Focus on the relationship and not so much the process.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">In case you're curious, the flow of the clinic is as follows:</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">1. People come and receive a number to hold their place in line. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">2. One by one, they come to a table where individual volunteers (us and some local pastors and volunteers) are seated. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">3. We invite the person to fill out some contact information, and then guide them through some talking points: </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><span> - Do you believe in God?</span><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span> - Do you belong to a church?</span><br /></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span><span> - If you were to die do you know for certain you would live in eternity with Jesus?</span><br /></span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span><span><span> - Can we pray for you / with you?</span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span><span><span><span> - Have you been baptized?</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span><span><span><span>4. We pray with or for the individual and then bring them to another waiting room to be fitted for some reading glasses. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span><span><span><span>The goal is to spend some time making a connection and give Julius and his volunteers an opportunity to follow up with them at a later time. The other goal is to help the person make a profession of faith if they are interested in pursuing a life changing relationship with Christ. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span><span>Today we saw about <b>200 people</b> and had to turn some away because of time (we are going back to that location on Friday). <b>Our team prayed the salvation prayer with 5 individuals</b>. </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span><span><span><span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; So many wonderful songs and dancing (yes, dancing) followed bringing us into such a wonderful time of praise and worship. The songs ranged from very fast paced with lots of clapping and more dancing (you'll probably want to ask Linda and Kathy about how the spirit literally moved them around the sanctuary) to very slow and worshipful songs - some in English and some in different African languages. What an awesome treat to get a glimpse into how worship might be in Heaven.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">A familiar hymn: </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cLCPcebqIkk" width="320" youtube-src-id="cLCPcebqIkk"></iframe></div><br /><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Our very own Pastor Keith was invited to preach - and he definitely brought the Word! He shared a timely message of how we are called to worship in spirit and in mind, and to illustrate his point, he then sang a song he taught our children's choir a while back in an African language as well as "Come Though Fount of Every Blessing".</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj500TZThCIiUgLOGUyrv7ir-KOatz9ieY9_scXibIafggKN01pvZUEdDV8OIaFWzw6bEGH--EkUQD5oxGVkEl-iEPFYHZxPGvGyevnykC_4lIxmqrYARz9L-Qo6WwP6mB3FXND38krCiOYU_TMhqXaX7-GNVuTZarS_8nEfm4TYNHtXdchU5_kRsKJ5g" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1159" data-original-width="2044" height="181" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj500TZThCIiUgLOGUyrv7ir-KOatz9ieY9_scXibIafggKN01pvZUEdDV8OIaFWzw6bEGH--EkUQD5oxGVkEl-iEPFYHZxPGvGyevnykC_4lIxmqrYARz9L-Qo6WwP6mB3FXND38krCiOYU_TMhqXaX7-GNVuTZarS_8nEfm4TYNHtXdchU5_kRsKJ5g" width="320" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /><br /></span></div><span style="font-family: arial;">While that was going on, Hannah and Joy got an opportunity to teach Kids Church to about 50 kids from ages 0-17 (all in one room!). The kids then joined in a fun craft of friendship bracelets and a laughter-filled game with a 20' parachute (which barely fit in the room). </span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjdpQyNTGlOtrEzfJNYJUEDb3LEtu6tqLn_vxShWKvoMTKeHMhniemVZRnjaT_ujs5WsLY6nlgmZLEU34rChyNSoWNxb7ZjMVEi4rRADeqlOKcj5R_UcFoof3fiiR-sNOwpOr77cCOF646mKV6IeWezG7NXfX9_4IKmNSXYFtgepn9GH__klfRc21nOJw" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjdpQyNTGlOtrEzfJNYJUEDb3LEtu6tqLn_vxShWKvoMTKeHMhniemVZRnjaT_ujs5WsLY6nlgmZLEU34rChyNSoWNxb7ZjMVEi4rRADeqlOKcj5R_UcFoof3fiiR-sNOwpOr77cCOF646mKV6IeWezG7NXfX9_4IKmNSXYFtgepn9GH__klfRc21nOJw" width="320" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The volunteers then served all of the church a delicious braai (BBQ) South African style of rice, pap (cornmeal porridge), beef, pork, chicken and sausages. What blessing might you miss by not stepping into a new environment?</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">- over and over, this congregation amazed us with how well they served our team - including something I don't think any of us have experienced before: prior to lunch a woman (assisted by John) came by and helped us wash our hands by pouring warm soapy water over our hands and into a bowl. It was somehow both helpful and humbling at the same time. It conjured a similar image of Jesus' feet being washed by Mary. It's exciting and fun and eye-opening, and at the same time it's tiring, and uncomfortable (in more ways that one) and personal space isn't the same in all cultures.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Nonetheless, the seven of us arrived on the same flight into Johannesburg International Airport, and were greeted by Pastor Julius - we were all so happy to see him! We rented our 9 passenger van driven by the international-driving-left-side-of-the-road-expert, Keith Matney and his trusty navigator stay-to-the-left-watch-for-humans-in-the-road, Steve Waller. We safely made our way to the beautiful Oppihoek Guesthouse in Pretoria. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj34qOVKAUBIMutL7ruVGzFUhnHYu8Gj8HyTMU_y8s0Shz3FezM7RyMgJGw6QJS9lgsgeOjEqHhgl7maipZ3TGuvfGAtpZqT8FiqYc6c--HJbA-4t7bK2M9b2_rdZ9gkOhn5JpiGGGzUgSNiSjfKk90pfc1TUbuKpVKvE8iNzvOjTkm_RKeqZfom166-g" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj34qOVKAUBIMutL7ruVGzFUhnHYu8Gj8HyTMU_y8s0Shz3FezM7RyMgJGw6QJS9lgsgeOjEqHhgl7maipZ3TGuvfGAtpZqT8FiqYc6c--HJbA-4t7bK2M9b2_rdZ9gkOhn5JpiGGGzUgSNiSjfKk90pfc1TUbuKpVKvE8iNzvOjTkm_RKeqZfom166-g" width="320" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">After our traditional first day lunch at Nando's (a local chicken fast food restaurant) and a quick stop at a men's conference being taught by some pastor friends of Julius (in the mall!), we came back for a shower and some rest. <br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">We have just returned from a fun and delicious dinner with our team, Julius & Cintia, Julius' sister Esther and her son (dad's out of town) and a cousin. One of the great gifts from God is how relationships in His Kingdom often feel like coming home even when the surroundings and people are very different. It has been so wonderful to connect with each other again.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Prayer Requests: <br />- please pray for one of our suitcases to arrive in the next day. It has glasses in it and should be on a late flight from Heathrow.<br />- our first Sunday service tomorrow<br />- for everyone to get good rest and to acclimate to the time zone quickly</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Hannah also captured some fun video of the day: </span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/h2gBEuhrPbI" width="320" youtube-src-id="h2gBEuhrPbI"></iframe></span></div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span><p></p><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /><br /></span><p></p>FSBCS Africa Teamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16610669493551742596noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2350327285355590862.post-41656098544923075262023-03-09T07:37:00.003-07:002023-03-09T07:37:46.595-07:002023 trip: Leaving on a jet plane!<p><span style="font-family: arial;"> We are very excited to finally be leaving for South Africa today! The team has been preparing for several months now... in spite of that, there always seem to be so many last minute things to do before you get on a 20 hour flight - including mentally preparing yourself for a 20-hour flight!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">We will be working with Pastor Julius Mbu and his wife Cintia at Hope Baptist Church in Pretoria (Sunnyside), South Africa. How we have anticipated this moment to see how God has continued to move in the four years that has passed since we last saw them. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">We are going to hand out non-prescription eyeglasses in an ongoing ministry that the church has in the community. This is something that our teams have done in the past as well. FSBC Scottsdale and FBC Fountain Hills (now Cornerstone) have donated about 1000 pairs of glasses that we will hand out. <br />We will also lead some workshops in counseling for pastors, marriage enrichment, and worship leadership. The team will also get to help in an after school program and help some kids with homework!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">No trip to South Africa would be complete without an opportunity to see some animals out in the wild - so, this week we will also head to Pilanesberg, a game reserve, where we will take a break during the week, and bring Julius and Cintia along to have fun and relax!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Pray specifically: <br />- For safety, logistics, and health of our team</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">- For the opportunity to share the Gospel with those we meet</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">- For a time of encouragement and ministry with Julius and Cintia</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">In the meantime, we are off on a great adventure... but first 20-hours on a plane!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Blessings, </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The 2023 team: Keith & Kathy Matney, Linda Briseno, John Herr, Steve & Joy Waller & Hannah</span></p>FSBCS Africa Teamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16610669493551742596noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2350327285355590862.post-53264932950145264672018-10-05T17:23:00.000-07:002018-10-05T17:23:03.817-07:00Some closing thoughts...<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Segoe UI", "Lucida Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 13.3333px;">Joy Waller</span><br />

The beauty of stepping out of your comfort zone is being able to gain new perspective and learn some new things about yourself as well. I am privileged to have the opportunity to travel many places. I always enjoy seeing the wonderful diversity of the body of Christ, and it reminds me to actively remember to reach out to those who aren't like me. </div>

I will share some closing prayer requests for you:</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Segoe UI", "Lucida Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 13.3333px;">
<ul>
<li>Pray for the many seeds planted through the eye glass clinics, and for the SA team as they follow up with each of them.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Pray that God strengthens the leaders at Hope Baptist Church: giving them endurance for the work, building character and leadership skills. Pray that they take the many learnings from the conference and are able to put them into practice.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Pray for Julius and Cintia: that their marriage continues to thrive, they have wisdom in their work, and energy for busier church life than we can even imagine.</li>
</ul>

Today was a special day of worship and prayer not only at
Hope Baptist Church, Sunnyside, but also her two church plants in Soshanguve,
South Africa: Hope Baptist Church of Soshanguve and Faith Baptist Church. The team served in the three locations
somewhat simultaneously in order to assist and lead out in the morning
activities. While Keith Matney preached at Hope Church, Sunnyside, Steve Waller
and Mitch McDonald preached at the churches in Soshanguve. God’s message of
hope and love was shared through these three men of God, resulting in several
new additions to the body of Christ.

The conference began around 9:30 today with about 45 minutes
of<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>wonderful praise and worship. There
were three morning plenary sessions around the topic of God Healing our
Communities. Bill Bagwell shared a session
on God Healing our Finances. The
highlight was that God owns everything and we are simply stewards. Bill discussed financial planning topics and
ended with the importance of tithing and the church’s responsibility to utilize
tithes and offering well. This was
followed by a talk by Thokozile Zulu Elizabeth regarding God Healing
Women. She focused on abuse that is
occurring in South Africa among married women, where men are very
dominating. She shared about some of the
African Ancestral Worship that remains prevalent is parts of South Africa and
the family estrangement that can occur when family members accept Jesus Christ as their Savior.</div>

Steve Shook followed
Thoko’s session by sharing God Healing Churches. Steve listed good characteristics of healthy
churches and alternatively common habits leading to unhealthy churches. Steve then listed excellent suggestions for
churches to return to a healthy status. The
three plenary sessions were well received by approximately 80 people, including
pastors and lay people from South Africa, Nigeria, Congo, Zimbabwe, Malawi and
others. After a delightful African lunch
buffet, we repeated our afternoon Workshops. A final Worship Service topped off the conference and then Pastor Julius
passed out certificates of completion to all the participants. We heard many outstanding testimonies during
the day regarding how God was changing the lives of people in Africa. And we are greatly impacted through seeing
God act in the lives of these small churches with less financial resources than
we have in America.</div>

Our first full day here at Hope Baptist has been a whirlwind of activity! Most of us were so tired that we slept through a powerful thunderstorm last night. Can you say jet lag!! We started the day with fellowship, prayer and a spectacular devotion from our amazing Edith....she had a beautiful reminder for us to keep our focus on Jesus! Sarah, our hostess at the bed and breakfast made a breakfast fit for kings and queens to get us fueled up and ready to share our message of growth and hope! We arrived at the church and were so pleased to find there were many many people ready to learn and grow as leaders in the Christian Community. </div>

Worship like I have never experienced led off the day....such uninhibited joy and praise in song and dance!! Pastor Julius led introductions of some of the team prior to well received plenaries from the head of PEN on campus at Hope, Dr. Marinda Van Niekerk, followed by Mitch McDonald and then Mona McDonald. After lunch the team all broke up to teach our assigned workshops which were broken up around the campus. Each of the workshops was well attended with great participation and many questions. Many of the team members were able to minister to one or more of the attendees from their session with individual questions, and to delve a bit deeper into the subject matter. After some more time in worship, many attendees participated in a graduation ceremony from a pastoral training program that Pastor Julius is championing here - we even saw a marriage proposal (she said YES).</div>

We ended our day with dinner at a local restaurant as a team. Now it is late, it has been a long day, and we are weary....but we are excited and encouraged! We have been received like family, the children and the jubilant worship have captured our hearts. Miss Edith and Mona even took an opportunity to show off their dance moves (yes there is video). God is moving and shaping lives here, the church is vibrant and striving to seek the lost for Jesus! Julius and Cintia and the church are a beautiful picture of loving on this community as Christ commanded. We are proud and humbled to play even a small part of helping advance God's kingdom here. Tomorrow starts early, so it is time to slow down and thank God for what He has done today, and all He has planned for the rest of our trip. Goodnight from South Africa! </div>

We spent time at the church organizing conference materials
and sorting several suitcases of reading glasses and sunglasses. It seems like
more than we’ll ever distribute. But two clinics will make short work of
getting them into the hands of those needing them. Better yet, two clinics will
allow twice the opportunity to share Christ.<o:p></o:p></div>

Before getting a bit of dinner, we took advantage of what
was left of the early evening light and hit the street to pass out flyers; inviting

You know it's getting real when you're just throwing things at your suitcase. Forget the list <i>(honestly, forgot where I put it)</i> we are at the point when you remember to take what you thought you should remember to take - throw it on the pile and sort out the particulars later.<br />

<br />
Pray as we prepare to go.<br />
<br />
The 2018 South Africa team will be in country by South Africa's Thursday morning. Our departures vary a bit with family and work obligations.<br />
<br />
Pray for our families and work while we're away.<br />
<br />
While we're traveling, if we'll all stand on one foot, pat our stomachs and rub our heads <i>(wait. maybe it's the other way around)</i> perhaps the internet will cooperate and I'll be able to keep you in the loop.<br />
<br />
Pray for traveling mercies; connecting flights, long layovers and longer flights.<br />
<br />
hmmm...just remembered something I needed to remember to bring. I'm off to go throw it at my luggage, to be sorted out later.<br />

I neglected to post a final thank you for all of your prayers and encouragement throughout this Africa2017 journey!
<br>
<br>The team is home and readjusting to life as we know it. But we are not the same. What the Lord allowed us to see and experience will be forever seared into our hearts and we will never ever be the same. Thank you for your prayers. We did what God sent us to do - equip, train, impart and minister His grace and His truth to those in our path. Now we pray that whatever seeds were planted, God will grow in His perfect timing. We saw the lost saved, the saved encouraged, edified and equipped, and His name lifted high throughout the Christian Community Conference, Eye Glass Clinic, and other ministry opportunities. Julius and Cintia and their faithful staff at Hope Baptist Church are serving with integrity and honor in Sunnyside. The Lord is bringing in the harvest through their obedience to His call. Please continue in your prayers for all of them.

The first few snaps are of our team either shopping or meeting up at Hope Baptist. The remainder are a few samples of the precious people God has seared into our hearts from the Soshanguve community.
<br>
<br>Today, Pastor Keith will be preaching out at Soshanguve while Steve Shook is giving the word in a sermon at the main campus of Hope Baptist. Thank you for your prayers. This has been a powerful time as the Lord has faithfully connected hearts in Him. What a privilege it is to be an instrument to introduce people to our Jesus. Please pray that the seeds planted germinate and grow to full fruition in Christ. Our God longs for the lost to know Him and the saved to walk deeper with Him. Your prayers are crucial as we continue to share the truth of Jesus with those He brings across our path.

<br>Today begins the eye glasses clinic. We spent yesterday prowling the streets of Sunnyside inviting folks to join us and telling them about Hope Baptist Church. Pray God causes the seeds that were planted to germinate and bear much fruit. Pray for all of us as we share the good news of Jesus Christ with everyone He brings to us today at the clinic. Not one will leave without hearing and responding to the gospel! Make it so, Lord Jesus, to Your everlasting glory. We long to be used of You. ❤FSBCS Africa Teamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16610669493551742596noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2350327285355590862.post-23417481531862293222017-09-26T22:35:00.001-07:002017-09-26T22:35:44.953-07:00Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday !Pictures will follow separately as the internet here is slow and spotty. Continue to pray for the people of Hope Baptist, Sunnyside and all of South Africa even when you don't hear from us. The time change and internet connections make things a bit trickier than usual.

<br>The Christian Community Development Conference was amazing! Everyone on the team presented on different subjects and the reception of the attendees was encouraging. We trust that God is using our offerings to further His kingdom here in SA. Our team is grateful for your prayers as each of us felt the peace of Christ in our midst.

<br>Pray for all those who attended to take and implement the truths which God imparted.

<br>Today, we will be doing park and street evangelism. May God direct us to divine appointments and open many doors of opportunity for His good news of the gospel. May Jesus Christ be glorified.
